Introduction

Vision: “To engage in the conservation, rehabilitation and protection of the natural, historical and anthropological environment in the Wakkerstroom area.”

Mission: ” We intend to put our Vision into effect by conserving Wakkerstroom biodiversity through a biological, historical and anthropological inventory, land protection, ecological management of natural heritage, maintenance and education “

The WNHA is proudly conserving our environment for future generations. Our activities include identifying areas where environmental problems exist and are emerging, raising awareness, and interacting with the local council. In order to find solutions to problems and to be proactive to prevent further problems. Our projects include:

  • Website development for conservation awareness and planning
  • Controlling alien vegetation in the wetland and spraying of reeds
  • Nutrient and sewage pollution of the wetland
  • Upgrade and revamp of Clive Beck and renamed WNHA hide.
  • Regular water testing program to evaluate the quality of various water sources.
  • Wetland Photo competition
  • We became an Associate member of Heritage Association of South Africa, HASA.
  • We joined Mpumalanga Heritage Interest Group.
  • Design of new promotional banner..
  • Replacement of the broken bench at top of Ossewa Kop. 
  • Mining prospecting challenges.

We have successfully achieved a number of projects over the years, including but not limited to:

  • Board walks to hides.
  • Management and maintenance of hides, walkways and signage.
  • Sponsorship of the U19 Argentina Football Club
  • Construction of picnic area and painting of Paul Kruger Bridge
  • Purchase of equipment and herbicide for the spraying of reeds on an annual basis
  • Water pipeline

The WNHA is a founder member and active participant of the Wakkerstroom Protected Environment Management Committee, a project that is seeking to have the Wakkerstroom Wetland declared a RAMSAR site and the surrounding area a Protected Environment.
